James G. Hakim Global Health Award
Sponsored by Afrehealth, CUGH, and the Fogarty International Center
Dr. James G. Hakim (1954-2021) was an acclaimed researcher and professor and a profoundly important leader in advancing medical research and education in Africa. He was the Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, a founding member of AFREhealth, a member and esteemed partner to CUGH, and a longstanding, prominent grantee of the Fogarty International Center.
To celebrate the tremendous scientific and public health accomplishments that mark the prolific career of Dr. Hakim and memorialize the loss of this great humanitarian, we are establishing an award in his name.

Selection: The main selection criterion will be the highest score on an abstract submitted for the CUGH annual meeting as judged routinely by the annual meeting Scientific Committee, usually at least three months before the annual meeting, which will allow time to organize sponsored travel. A panel of one representative each from AFREhealth, CUGH, and FIC will confirm the selectee’s eligibility and make the final selection. Additional criteria may be used to make a final award, e.g., potential professional impact of the awardee, other concurrent CUGH awards, and diversity vis a vis other awardees.
